1981 MB 380SL roadster 2 seater with both soft top and removable hard top. 137K miles. That is less than 5000 per year. The car has the original paint and the condition is amazing for its age. There is absolutely no rust on this car and there are no leaks. The soft top and the vinyl windows are excellent. The underside is a dry as a bone. This car was last on the road in 2006. Storing and not driving these cars is the worse thing one can do as far as keeping them running properly. The gentleman that owned this car, the second owner, was transferred out of the country and came home to Houston on occasion and drove the car daily up until 2006. Since then it has only been around the block a couple of times a year.
The leather drivers seat and arm rest are dried out and cracked. I have found an e bay seller that sells both seat covers complete in a MB TEX material which is a vinyl for $195 . Some of the SLs had the MB TEX vinyl seats

The second owner upgraded the single timing chain to a double timing chain in the late 90s. That’s a big deal on theses early 380 engines, and spent a lot of money upgrading this car in other respects. I have the list of parts and and the money he spent. This car drives well, straight down the road at 75 mph, no squeaks and no inherent rattles only an exhaust hanger needs to be tightened as it rattles when going over bumps. It had been serviced by a MB specialist under the last owner.

There are 2 problems with this car. One; the AC system does not work. He did not care as he left the top down 100% of the time or garaged it. The problem is most likely the blower motor. It is frozen. I have a replacement that I saw work in the shop so I believe it is fine for the car and the fix is pretty easy because it is under the hood not the dash. The compressor is not working from lack of use. I can get one for the buyer at my cost of $200.

The second problem is that there is a miss in the engine at low RPM. It smooths out at about 1000 to1200 RPM. I installed new plugs, wires, cap and rotor hoping that would cure the miss. There are a couple of further possibilities, one leaking fuel injector dumping too much fuel, faulty fuel distributor, same issue, too much fuel or a vacuum leak. There are other small issues that need to be addressed. I have put new gas and injector cleaner in the car and driven around Loop 610 at 75 MP. twice. The former owner said using the car for a couple of days after using injector cleaner would usually clear up the miss. in the engine. That has not worked for me.

The car comes with a roll around stand for the hard top, and a hanging pulley system for storing the top hanging from the garage ceiling. It has a MB bike rack, The original tools and first aid kit, original owners manual and a bunch of other misc parts. The wheels are from a ‘87-’91 SL.

The price I’m selling for reflects the need for repair. NADA puts this car at low value at $13,700, Avg. value $17,700 and high value at $22,700. If you like these cars and have the talent or the funds to get it where it should be I think it would be a fine car. Some might drive and enjoy as is and have the work done over time. Fall is coming and driving this car with the top down is a kick. I have too many car projects and I need to pull some funds together for college tuition for the spring semester for my son and this is the car from my several classics I have chosen to sell. Otherwise I’d keep it, fix it and enjoy it.

I can be reached on my cell at 713-574-0041 before 10:00 in the evening please. I am not a dealer, I’m a hobbyist. Therefore no trades, no time payments. Cash only. I will consider sincere reasonable offers once you have seen the car. $4500.00 Thanks
